SOUVIENS TOI QUE TU VAS MOURIR ! "Vanités, du Caravage à Damien Hirst" au Musée Maillol

As a contemporary art goer and enthusiast, the best surprises haven't been art works from Annette Messager, Nikky de Saint Phalle, Subdoh Gupta, Yan Pei Ming, Jan Fabre, Zhan Huan or the very much expected, although provocatively brilliant Damien Hirst.
I'd give a particular mention to Miquel Barcelo "Grani amb Taronja", Claudio Parmiggiani "Sans titre"
, as well as Philippe Cognée "Vanité 9" (I discovered last Fall at Galerie Templon, further down on this blog)

The purpose of my visit was mostly to look for a reminder of the modern and classic old times.

I very much enjoyed a fantastic Zurbaran "Saint François agenouillé", de la Tour, Gericault "les 3 crânes", Buffet super "Homme au crâne" paintings among a few others

But for sure, the most marvellous Memento Mori works were:
- in the "Cabinet de curiosités" with amazing academic skulls,
miniature objects such as coffins, statues and boxes- made of marble, wood, stone, ivory, bone, cristal from the 19th...- oh, the "crâne académique avec petit livre "La danse des morts" de Gustave Flaubert"... : such delicacy and agility

- and the colorful-classic-while-so-trendy skulls jewels from 19th century
venitian house Codognato: so modernnnnn
On my list for the soon to come trip to Venice!
